Guide to Sunrise

A 60-day phase during which early registrants have access to domain names that contain trademarked names. Only holders of registered trademarks that have been validated by the Trademark Clearinghouse and that have an SMD file will be able to register their trademark name in the new TLD.

During the Sunrise phase, holders of eligible trademarks have the opportunity to apply for and register the domain names that correspond with those trademarks before registration is opened to the public.

Sunrise Lock Phase

A period of 60 days after a domain name is awarded to a Sunrise applicant pending any Sunrise challenge. The domain name cannot be modified, transferred, or deleted during this period.

  • Consists exclusively of letters, words, numerals, and special characters that meet the syntax requirements
  • Has been validated by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) and has a Signed Mark Data (SMD) file generated

In addition to the standard application contents, domain name applications made during Sunrise must also include:

  • The trademark on which the application is based, which has been submitted to and verified by the TMCH
  • The SMD file generated by the TMCH

At conclusion of Sunrise, Identity Digital Inc will finish the validation process. If there is only one valid application for a domain string, the domain will be awarded to that applicant.

If there are two or more valid applications for a domain string, those applicants will be invited to participate in a closed auction for the domain name. The domain will be awarded to the auction winner after payment is received.

Auctions are conducted according to specific rules and ethics guidelines. Employees, partners, and contractors of the registry are prohibited from participating in Sunrise auc-tions.

Once a domain is awarded to an applicant during the Sunrise phase, it is in a “Sunrise Lock” for a minimum of 60 days to allow parties to file Sunrise Challenges. Domains in Sunrise Lock cannot be updated, transferred, or deleted.

Domain Name Syntax Requirements

Syntax requirements apply to all domain names registered with Identity Digital for any TLD, but they are particularly important during Sunrise phase for trademark holders. During Sunrise, the domain name applied for must be identical to the eligible trademark. It shall not be possible for the applicant to obtain a domain name registration for a part of the complete name for which the eligible trademark exists, unless provided for otherwise in the exceptions listed below.

Exceptions

The following are technical exceptions to the principle described above:

  • If the eligible trademark invoked by the applicant includes one or more spaces between words, the spaces may be removed entirely or replaced with a hyphen.
  • If the eligible trademark invoked by the applicant includes a special character (such as, but not limited to, “-“, “@”, “!”, “§”, “%”, “^”, “©”, or “&”), these characters, at the applicant’s sole discretion, may be eliminated entirely from the domain name, transcribed, or replaced with a hyphen.
  • If the eligible trademark includes letters with certain additional elements that do not exist in standard Latin script (such as “ä”, “é” or “ñ”), such letters may be reproduced without such elements (that is, “a”, “e”, “n”), or replaced by conventionally accepted spellings, (such as “ae”).
  • If the eligible trademark includes characters such as “á”, “é”, “í”, “ó”, “ú”, “ü”, “ñ”, the applicant is entitled to change such characters in the domain name to the equivalent IDN characters. The applicant also is entitled to change such characters in the domain name to the corresponding letters like “a”, “e”, “i”, “o”, “u”, or “n”.

The Applicant may eliminate references to a trademark or service mark such as “TM”, “SM”, and the like, references to a company type, such as S.A.S, Ltd., LLP, and the like, as well as references to existing TLDs from the text or word elements of the eligible trademark.

Sunrise Create Syntax

The Sunrise Create form contains the verifiable trademark information that the Identity Digital TLD SRS will use to match the domain application against registrations in the Trademark Clearinghouse. Identity Digital SRS accepts either Signed Mark Data or Encoded Signed Mark Data for transmitting the trademark information.

Sunrise Info

The EPP <info> command is used to retrieve information about a domain object in the Identity Digital TLD SRS database.

The Launch Phase mapping adds functionality to the EPP <check> command that returns information about the status of an application and to retrieve the associated application identifier [applicationID] field that is used in the <create> command.

Launch Status

Domain registration applications during the launch phases will include a launch status value that indicates their progress through the launch phase application process. The launch status is defined in the <launch:status> element using the following syntax:

<launch:status s=”status value” />

Contains the launch status of an application where the status is defined using the “s” attribute and a value from the following list:

  • pendingValidation

The initial state of a newly-created application or registration object. The application or registration requires validation, but the validation process has not yet completed.

  • validated

The application meets registry rules.

  • invalid

The application does not meet registry rules, but may transition back to “pendingValidation” once corrections are made.

  • allocated

The object corresponding to the application has been provisioned (this is a possible end-state for an application).

  • rejected

The object corresponding to the application was not provisioned (this is a possible end-state for an application).
